Welcome to Freedive Cornwall
Whether you are looking for a whole new way to view the Cornish coastline, or to improve your breathhold diving skills for spearfishing, snorkelling, coping with surfing hold downs, underwater photography, or you just fancy life as a mermaid or manatee - Freedive Cornwall can help.
Freedive Cornwall courses and guided safaris will show you how to stay longer underwater on one breath. We'll also make sure you can move gracefully and quietly through the underwater environment so you can get even closer to marine life - experiencing life as a seal sees it.
With loads of hours under the Cornish coastal waters under our stretchy rubber weightbelts, all the Freedive Cornwall team have a host of favourite sites to take you too - from secret seal caves, dramatic kelp forests, hidden and not-so-hidden shipwrecks and fish nurseries to rival the reefs of the Red Sea.
Whilst we explore, depending on your level of ability, we can help you work on:
- Breathing and relaxation techniques
- Extending your breath hold time safely
- Duck dive technique
- Finning efficiently and effectively to extend your dive and not scare the fish!
- Equalising your ears so you can descend further
- Equipment advice and weighting for freedive explorations
- Buddying and safety technique
- Weather, current, tide and other elements of choosing a dive site
For those of us lucky enough to live in Cornwall, or anyone visiting, we organise a dive once a week all year round for those of you who have already qualified with an AIDA 2* or Intro to Freediving course. In summer, we try and fit in a sneaky after work fun dive on a Thursday - sign up on our Facebook page.
In winter, we run weekly pool sessions in Helston, so you can keep your freediving skills up right through the winter. The focus at the pool sessions is on Static and Dynamic Apnea. Training for winter 2011/12 will be from 9-10pm on a Monday night at Helston, from October until the first week of March. Visit our pool page for more details. You will need to complete your AIDA * or ** freediving qualification, or equivalent before you join us in the pool .

Whether you are total beginnner, clumsy-land-mammal in newly purchased flippers (FINS!) who fancies an afternoon's assistance to look more like a seal and less like a beached whale, or an already quite slick spearo who wants to dive longer or deeper, we have a full range of experiences and courses available. If you decide that you'd like to go even further and get into competitive freediving or become a freedive instructor, our sister company Saltfree Divers can help with that too. Choose your course on the list to the right to find out more.
All without the need for scuba equipment.... (although we can help with that too, just ask if you're interested!).
Freedive Cornwall and Saltfree Divers were both founded and are run by Sam Kirby. Sam is an AIDA International Instructor Trainer and Judge, a former UK Team Captain and a PADI Course Director. All our instructors are formally trained with PADI and/or AIDA, insured... and sensible!
